Gurudongmar Lake

Overview

Gurudongmaar is the highest lake in the world, located at an altitude of 17800 feet in the Indian State of Sikkim. Its exact location is Lachen which is again a beautiful place to visit in the north-east India. It is considered to be one of the most sacred lakes, by the Buddhists, Sikhs and the Hindus. Historical information

The Gurdongmaar Lake was named after the famous Guru Padmasambhava, who was also called Guru Rinpoche. The frozen condition of the state is related to the saint. The locals appealed to the Guru for help. He placed his hands on the lake and the ice in that point began to melt. It was also blessed by the first Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Nanak ji in the 15th century. When Guru Nanak touched a part of the lake with his walking stick, it became free of snow.
