Historical information

The town of Gangtok remained an unknown hamlet, until the Enchey Monastry was established in 1840. It was only during the British rule in India that Gangtok became prevalent. By the nineteenth century the reigning emperor or ‘chogyal’ of Sikkim shifted his capital to Gangtok. After India attained its independence, Sikkim remained an independant monarchy. In 1975, the monarchy rule was withdrawn and Sikkim became a State of India, andGangtok became its capital.
